32 Studio 5000 ProTips for Machine Builders
A year of Studio 5000 and machine-builder ProTips, one small thing at a time, in one place.

I've been posting Studio 5000 and machine-builder ProTips for about a year. People kept asking for them in one place, so here's the running index. Built for OEMs, machine builders, and anyone living in Studio 5000.
- Use NC sensors for overtravels (catch a failed switch before a crash)
- Use PLC nonvolatile memory to commission machines without a laptop
- FILL 0, length 1 to clear a UDT
- Turn on hot keys and routine descriptions for fast programming
- Group BOOLs in UDTs to save controller capacity
- MOD for position math that survives encoder rollover
- Buy the HMI screen protector and sensor guards (the top two field failures)
- Never hard-code numbers. Use a constant tag for context and cross-reference
- An AOI with a [1] InOut tag accepts any array length
- Indirectly reference arrays AND DINTs (recipes, sequencers, input scans)
- XPY to set a single bit position in a DINT
- Fill a DINT with -1 to set all 32 bits (mask init)
- Use the tag Style dropdown (binary, hex, ASCII) for readable intent
- AOI Prescan to init tags, EnableInFalse to clean them up
- A naming convention for temp bits (zzz plus initials) so they never ship
- Run SIZE on first scan only
- GSV the program or routine name straight to the HMI
- Turn on ADC so a swapped VFD self-configures from its IP
- T_Sync AOI to keep PLC time on NTP
- Bookmark toolbar: the troubleshooting navigation trick
- GSV WallClockTime for HMI timestamps
- Minimize the motion group and IO config before going online (huge over VPN)
- Array shifting, method 1: reverse shift (memory-safe)
- Array shifting, method 2: copy-copy (insert anywhere)
- The two hidden Studio 5000 menus (module status and AOP version)
- The $ string escape character
- Read motion error codes and wrap them in an AOI and faceplate
- Multi-Version Download and a shared basket for new hires
- IO mapping is a must: scan consistency and one-line hardware fixes (full post)
- Wire labels left-to-right, top-to-bottom, always
- TRN to split the whole number from the decimal
- Don't copy/paste-tune rigidly geared servos (they'll fight and hum)
